The Treaty of Amsterdam and Agenda 2000
Article Abstract:
A draft treaty was agreed by the European Union (EU) in Amsterdam in Jun 1997 which includes a chapter on employment. The EU aims to promote employment through a skilled labor force that responds rapidly to change. Agenda 2000 is a communication from the EU published in Jul 1997 which deals with enlargement of the EU to include five countries from eastern Europe, as well as reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, changes to the Structural Fund, and the EU's finances.

Article Abstract:
The European Commission determined in October 2002 that ten applicant states met the political criteria for EU membership, and that they would also meet the economic criteria. It was recommended that they be admitted at the beginning of 2004. The ten applicant states are: Slovenia, the Slovak Republic, Poland, Malta, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Cyprus .
