The Union expects Europe's voters to fit its political space
Article Abstract:
Members of the European Union (EU) have developed sanctions against Austria following the inclusion of a far-right party, the Freedom party, in a coalition government in Austria. The sanctions do not amount to a formal EU policy, and are unsustainable over the longer term. There are dangers arising from the sanctions, which could hamper institutional reforms and plans to enlarge the EU. There has also been a precedent for interference in the domestic policies of an EU member.
