Iran's reformers vault to victory
Article Abstract:
Reformists have been successful in elections in Iran where they have won 136 seats of a total of 290 in parliament through the Islamic Iran Particiaption front which has Muhammad Reza Khatami, the brother of the president, as its leader. They seek more respect for private lives, including the legalization of TV satellite dishes, and greater freedom of speech. There are still institutional obstacles to change from the Council of Guardians, which includes six clerics of a toial of 12 members, and which can veto laws. The Expediency Council also carries weight in politcal life.
