David Mellor has been named to head the UK's new ministry of culture, the Department of National Heritage. The UK's arts community has long desired a cabinet-level agency along the lines of France's culture ministry, but Mellor may aggressively oppose aid to artists whose work he does not appreciate.

UK Prime Minister John Major has named William Waldegrave Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and given Waldegrave responsibility for setting the nation's science policy. Waldegrave will be the first cabinet officer with such responsibility since the 1960's.
