Changes are planned to the role of Japan's self-defense forces, and the role of the military is constrained by the Japanese constitution. Article 9 involves a renouncement of war, though self-defense is not ruled out. Japan relies on US military support, and the US is seeking to persuade Japan to take a more active role. There are a number of trouble spots such as North Korea. The region could become safer if Japan takes a more active role in promoting stabiloty in Asia.
