Japan fights to rewrite its war history
Article Abstract:
Japan's school textbooks are sparking controversy over teaching of its wartime activities. The Ministry of Education's decision to allow some textbooks to include references to Asian women used as sex slaves during World War II is being opposed by citizens' groups and politicians. Compromises made by the US at the end of World War II, such as pardoning Japan's emperor and other Japanese officials from prosecution of war crimes, have kept much information from becoming public.

Crackdown won't open Japan's corporate closets
Article Abstract:
The aggressive crackdown on corporate payoffs to the sokaiya, or blackmailers, may not be enough to end the sokaiya. It is questionable whether the flurry of revelations and arrests can steer a new period of transparency and rationality in corporate behavior. A complete enforcement of financial deregulation and the determination of investors in this new surrounding are needed to ensure higher standards of corporate accountability and disclosure.
