The aging of Japan means huge changes for society
Article Abstract:
Japanese society faces a number of changes as the Japanese population is aging fast, portending an increase in the number of retirees and the consequent reduction in the size of its labor force. If left unchecked, these will have a profound impact on the economy, including a depletion of its high savings rate, a fall into deficit of its trade surplus, the flight of Japanese industry and further liberalization of its already tightly controlled markets. The rapid aging of the Japanese population is traced to the low birth rate since the 1960s.
