Inigo Jones was described as the first professional English architect, who invented a form of architectural education that was to set the model for the next two centuries. He was undoubtedly a formidable intellect as his drawings revealed a process through stages of uncertainty and awkardness in the Classical repertoire, but it was difficult to imagine that all previous designers were unselfcritical and avoided drafts.
