The history of the development of the 'giant magneto-resistive' (GMR) head and its impact on the computer industry is examined. The GMR head was a quantum leap in data storage, allowing computer hard-drives to jump from a few gigabytes to tens and then hundreds of gigabytes.

Article Abstract:
The highly-successful CD-ROM 'Myst' inspired many to try to duplicate its success, but most of those who tried simply lost money. In many ways, multimedia CD-ROMs have failed to live up to expectations, and part of the reason is the uniform lack of quality in the industry.
