The biggest tree sale of all
Article Abstract:
Forest land in Maine is being offered for sale, as paper companies are separating forest land from mills. Companies that have ceased to own forests include Bowater and South African Pulp and Paper. Plum Creek Timber, which has acquired land, aims to obtain the greatest value from it, and this is part of a wider trend whch could involve more development. There is concern that this could lead to environmental damage such as loss of wildlife habitat. There is a debate as to how to protect these forests in the best way.

Taiga, taiga, bruning bright!
Article Abstract:
Russia retains a large amount of forest land and may succeed in harvesting and conserving this resources, which would help the world as a whole. These forests are a biodiversity reserve and there are deciduous as well as coniferous forests. Some deciduous forests were unaffected by glaciation and contain wildlife from before the ice age. There are still inhabitants in Russian forests, and the land is state-owned. Long leases for logging companies can help promote conservation, as can eco-tourism.
