The candidate: T.S. Lo and Hong Kong press freedom
Article Abstract:
China's treatment of Hong Kong's free-press tradition remains ambiguous as less than a year remnains until Beijing assumes control of the territory, but wisdom favors maintaining the current freedoms. The ability to express any view on nearly any topic largely creates Hong Kong's atmosphere of liberty, and fuels its economic competitiveness. China surely wants to preserve Hong Kong's special characteristics and economic drive, which depend on outsiders' continued willingness to invest there, according to liason Lo Tak-Shing. A free press draws such investment.

China comes courting: how to win friends and influence Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
China's consistent refusal to include Hong Kong residents in its discussions on the colony's future, and its rejection of most British proposals, have created the atmosphere of distrust that Beijing now complains of. The people of Hong Kong have long suspected the Joint Declaration would not be fully implemented despite China's claims, and the mainland's strategy of threats and intransigence does nothing to allay those fears. Concrete plans for the government and a demonstration of what Hong Kong will gain are in order.

Angry at China? Slam Japan
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong sentiment toward Japan on the issue of the Diaoyu islands has been linked to Japan's past relations with China and the invasion of Manchuria. There is little awareness of the Diaoyu island dispute in Japan but the issue is hotly debated in Hong Kong. Japan appears to be an issue that can unite different camps in Hong Kong, yet the reaction is linked to Hong Kong's frustration with mainland China, and Japan is easier to attack than mainland China.
