The conservation compromise
Article Abstract:
English Heritage (EH) in July 2005 pledged to engage with architects and developers in constructive conservation as part of a five-year modernization program aimed at shedding the body's reactionary image. Chief executive Simon Thurley's announcement was seen less as a change of heart toward the conservation lobby and more as a politically correct tactic designed to resuscitate its crumbling finances.
