The dangers in East Timor
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's president, B.J. Habibie, has agreed to permit a peacekeeping force from the United Nations to enter East Timor following internetional pressure after killings by opponts of independence. The majority vote for independence in a referendum in Aug 1999 was followed by attacks from militias opposed to independence and backed by Indonesian police and its armed forces. There are a number of concerns such as attacks on the peacekeepers, and possible retaliation by then which could lead to political problems in Indonesia. Supporters of East Timor's independence could also become involved in armed conflict.
