The loveliness of bankruptcy: Russian privatisation

Sergei Belyaev replaces Vladimir Polevanov, who as minister of privatization had been undermining the process, re-nationalizing industries and keeping inept Soviet-era managers in charge. As head of the federal Bankruptcy Agency, Belyaev proved that bankruptcy can save Russian business.

Russia is embarking on the largest privatization effort in history as the country will attempt to sell off hundreds of firms in the first few months of 1993. It will have to be done quickly before more conservative Russian cabinet members renege on the plan.
