The decline and fall of General Motors
Article Abstract:
General Motors faces a number of problems such as poor labor relations and a stock price that has underperformed. The company is carrying out a reorganization and this includes moving away from vertical integration with the sale of Delphi, centralization of sales, marketing and service, and a new network of assembly plants. The company also plans to consolidate its international and North American automotive business to form one unit world wide. Creativity is also needed for the company to be influential in the 21st century.

Honda chief executive and president. Nobuhiko Kawamoto, took over his tasks in 1990, and helped modernise the company, which has become one of Japan's two car firms that makes a serious profit. The company was too influenced by engineers, and Kawamoto paid more attention to finance and marketing. He also changed the decision making process, which became more of a top-down process. Kawamoto was originally an engineer with interests in motorcycles, and he has been successful by moving away from his and the company's past.
