The facade cracks: interim government splits over election timing
Article Abstract:
The interim Pakistani government put in power after Pres Ghulam Ishaq Khan removed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Apr 18, 1993 is starting to fragment over when new elections should be held and other issues. Ishaq Khan appointed Balakh Sher Mazari interim prime minister and promised new elections on Jul 14. However, this date may prove a mere formality if Ishaq Khan puts off the elections as is widely feared. The Pakistan People's Party, led by Benazir Bhutto, opposes postponement and the president's power to fire prime ministers and dissolve legislatures arbitrarily.

The battle of wits: Prime Minister Sharif takes on the powerful president
Article Abstract:
Politics in Pakistan has changed its focus from the opposition to the leadership conflict between Pres Ghulam Ishaq Khan and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The dispute was started by a hard criticism on the Sharif government by loyal official of the president Sen Tariq Chaudhry on Feb 28, 1993. Sharif responded by saying that Pakistan's Democratic foundations are shaky and recommended amendments to the constitutional provisions on the authority of the parliament.Pres Khan retaliated saying it is his duty to defend the present constitution.
