The view that apartheid aided economic growth in South Africa is unsupported by the facts. The South African economy in fact is plagued by high unemployment, low growth rates, and a falling savings rate. The African National Congress does not advocate a statist economic policy.

Whites in South Africa enjoy a relatively high standard of living, but years of apartheid have saddled most blacks in the country with third world living standards. Even when a post-apartheid government equalizes social spending, blacks will remain disadvantaged economically.

Southeast Asia has been the major source of foreign investment in South Africa since the end of apartheid. Malaysia is the top foreign investor at more than 3.5 billion rand so far in 1996. Malaysia and South Africa share a wealth of natural resources and political ties.
