The string quartet may not be the most popular genre among audiences, but many composers used the quartet as the vehicle for their greatest musical achievements. Hungary's Auer Quartet won the 1997 London International String Quartet competition. The Julliard Quartet's Robert Mann is retiring.

Japan's machine tool makers outperformed all other Japanese manufacturers in 1991 because they foresaw the recession that devastated capital budgets. Instead of the usual price wars, machine tool firms are competing with better products, cheaper components and diversification.
