The harm of patents

The US has too many complex laws concerning patents to intellectual property. International cooperation on development of new ideas is needed as technology becomes more complex. A uniform system for dealing with ownership of intellectual property which is simpler than US laws is needed.

Patent law should be changed to require applicants to emphasize the potential uses of a discovery so controversy concerning biotechnology patents of gene fragments would cease. The US National Institute of Health has applied for about 3,000 patents on expressed-sequence tags.

The US National Institute of Health applied for patents on DNA research to prevent private firms from keeping medically beneficial information a secret. The patents were rejected because such gene fragments are not novel or useful in themselves.
