Pres Clinton owes a good amount of his probable re-election to Greenspan's influence in keeping the economy stable and growing. The economy may or may not continue to grow into the next presidential term, but it will inevitably fall again. Whether this will happen under Greenspan remains to be seen.

Federal Reserve Chmn Alan Greenspan is correct in cautioning the stock market about its current excesses. Central bankers such as Greenspan are rightly concerned about equity prices. He is likely to raise interest rates several times in 1997 to lessen inflationary pressures.

Will Greenspan dare to raise the net?

Greenspan will probably raise interest rates in order to combat inflation despite the fact that such a choice will be politically unpopular with the Clinton administration. US monetary policy and the role of the Federal Open Market Committee are also discussed.
