The humbling of Jan Carlzon
Article Abstract:
Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) pres Jan Carlzon is recovering from his first defeats in seven years of leading the company: failure to purchase Belgium's Sabena airlines and failure to gain control of British Caledonian Airways. Carlzon also faces limited profits at SAS, a possible labor confrontation with pilots, and a threat from the European Community that would ban SAS' noisy DC-9 aircraft. SAS is owned by the governments of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, and is organized by 35 strike-inclined labor unions. Under Carlzon's leadership, however, SAS quintupled its pre-tax profit to 1987's $225 million on $2.9 billion in sales.

From desert to deluge in the Mediterranean
Article Abstract:
The Mediterranean Sea was isolated from the Atlantic Ocean between five and six million years ago, leading to some areas drying out. Messinian sediments are mostly devoid of marine fossils and so it is difficult to date or place this geological event. However a new stratigraphic method of astrochronology, reported by Krijgsman and colleagues allows the accurate dating of such fossil-poor sediments.
