The merit of waiting
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government argues that there is a need to wait before deciding on whether to join European monetary union, though it is also making positive gestures toward union. This policy may appear to be indecisive, but is sensible. There are a number of benefits to monetary union, but European monetary union also has a number of design faults. There is a need for popular support, and for fiscal flexibility to take national differences into account. Monetary union has become more of a risk with the fiscal constraints imposed by the 'stability pact'.

Carrot and stick
Article Abstract:
British competition policy involves incentives as well as sanctions, and there are plans for immunities for companies that expose cartels that they are involved in. Such companies have to leave the cartels and must not have been ringleaders. Competitors and customers can sue in the US, where price fixing can result in prison sentences. Greater powers for authorities to tackle cartels in Britain could result in a number of practices being exposed.
