The latest vehicle, driven by achievers
Article Abstract:
Venture capital trusts (VCTs) are now strongly competing with established venture capital fund managers and captive venture capital houses in the UK. Indeed, more than 370 million pounds sterling was raised by VCTs in the two tax years ending in 1997. VCTs are restricted to a maximum of 1 million pounds sterling per investment in any concern, and must have invested 70% of their funds within three years of flotation. The future of the sector is rather uncertain, as the government plans new rules to restrict the eligible investments a VCT can make.

Life beyond Europe
Article Abstract:
It is suggested that venture capital is spreading to developing markets such as South America, South Africa, India, Russia and eastern Europe; from more mature markets such as the UK, US and western Europe. A recent report by the European Venture Capital Association revealed that investment opportunities in eastern Europe were being hampered by limited information; complex procedures, tax and legal regulations; and lack of awareness of private equity.

A sense of anticipation
Article Abstract:
Members of the German Venture Capital Association invested Dm3.3 billion in 1998, a rise of 40% from 1997. Some venture capital houses anticipate that there could be around 12 large deals in Germany in the period to summer 2000, mainly spin-offs associated with restructuring. Many private equity houses from other countries have been encouraged to establish a presence in Germany as they have begun to recognize the potential of the German market.
