Australian historian Manning Clark, who died at age 76 in 1991, was one of the most respected men in his nation throughout his life. A recent article in the Brisbane Courier-Mail that accused him of being a communist and receiving the Soviet Union's Order of Lenin has shocked the country.

When the pumps suck

Russia's oil production is dropping so fast it could become a net importer of oil by 1995 despite being the second-largest oil producer in the world. Russia needs to be less wasteful in its energy usage and it should allow foreign companies to help with production.

Oil production in both ex-Soviet states and in Russia has fallen nearly 50% since the late 1980s. A Jan 1993 meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States debated how to share, distribute and price oil, which they formerly received at a subsidized low price.
