The 100th anniversary of poet Walt Whitman's death allows Americans to reflect on his status as perhaps the nation's national poet. Though scorned by many of his more traditional contemporaries, his verse perhaps expressed the spirit of the New World America represented better than any other.

A sobering view: Dylan Thomas
Article Abstract:
Thomas's hometown, Swansea, Wales, was slow to honor the poet. Although he died in 1953, he was only admitted to the Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey in Jun 1982. Many thought Thomas was an alcoholic. He also lacked popularity because he left Wales and did not write in Welsh.
