Pakistan takes a beating
Article Abstract:
Pakistan faces economic and political problems following the impact of nuclear tests on an unstable economy. The tests triggered sanctions, local bank accounts have been frozen, and the Pakistani rupee has dropped in value. Foreign investment has virtually halted, and migrants' remittances have been sent through non-official channels due to the poor official exchange rate. Violence has become a problem and bloodshed occurred during a general strike in Karachi. Prime minister Nawaz Sharif is among debtors refusing to pay his creditors with cash.
