Eclipse of the mirage makers
Article Abstract:
The UK has a balance of payments deficit due mainly to an imbalance in manufactured goods trading offset by invisible earnings from services. Weak manufactured exports causes currency fluctuations, raises interest rates and thereby depresses manufacturing even more. Japan and Germany also have trade imbalance problems but the economy remains healthy because manufacturing is strong. British manufacturing industries have run down in the last 10 years at the expense of services and the UK is now in desperate need of a manufacturing revival. This can only come from increased investment in research and development.
