Too many policymakers in the industrialized countries of the wealthy Northern Hemisphere fear that economic growth in the Southern Hemisphere will bring harm to their mature economies. This concern is misplaced, since growth in the South need not lead to contraction of Northern economies.

Until the late 1980s the US led world statistics on foreign direct investment but when the dollar devalued, the trend reversed as Japanese and British firms invested in the US. The new trend is for firms from industrial nations to invest in the third world.

Article Abstract:
Western firms are paying Russian soldiers to strip military bases of precious metals for export. However, many of these metals are radioactive and present health hazards. Western dumping of radioactive wastes in Eastern Europe is also discussed.
