The nationalist groundswell in Brazil
Article Abstract:
Brazil is a large country and may seek to ignore the outside world, with economic nationalism a reason for protectionism and slow progress toward liberalisation of investment and trade. Economic stagnation has contributed to nationalist concerns, though President Fernando Henrique Cardoso favors liberal economic policies. Privatizations have sparked debates on ownership by foreign companies. Brazil needs to focus on financial, budgetary and tax reforms to cut business costs.
