Embryonic stem cells, which are formed in vitro approximately a week after fertilization, develop into over 200 cell types, and scientists are working towards using these cells to replace damaged, dying or dead cells in the human body. Until scientists have perfected this work, medical science must rely on organ donations to replace damaged and dying body parts.
