The organic growth: Asian NGOs have come into their own
Article Abstract:
Asian and Pacific non-governmental organizations (NGOs) helped compel regional governments to curtail violations of human rights to some extent. These NGOs are more active than ever before and have diversified into four main categories: civil-liberties groups, community-development groups, environmental advocacy groups and women's-rights groups. These groups are working together more often in the 1990s. By bringing international attention to abuses, NGOs prevent governments from violating human rights with impunity.

Article Abstract:
Prominent Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng's sister has launched a international campaign for his release, 16 months after he was detained. Wei had previously spent 15 years in prison, and now authorities, who refuse to say where he is or to allow communication with him, will only note that judicial investigations are in process. Wei's sister Shanshan, a 40-year-old artist living in Germany, is on a speaking tour in Europe. A campaign is also getting started for the release of Tong Yi, a former aide to Wei.
