The politics of trade
Article Abstract:
Globalization is becoming an important issue in US politics, with protectionists joined by those with other concerns about trade, such as environmental, labor and human rights issues. There are increasing popular concerns about globalization, despite economic boom in the US. Republicans are divided on the issue, with some opposed to the work of the World Trade Organization because it is an international body, and others disliking China. The New Democrats are those who most favor free trade, though labor unions have influenced traditional Democrats who tend not to support free trade.

Article Abstract:
Trade has become a sensitive political issue in the US. In particular, there seems to be strong support for President Bill Clinton's firm stance against the sudden rise in steel imports from Japan and against European legislation apparently discriminating against bananas from the Caribbean. In contrast, there have been few calls for markets to be kept open. The trend towards protectionism is likely to accelerate when the US economy slows down, as is probable later in 1999. At present, US imports are rising and exports are falling, creating a very large trade deficit.

Article Abstract:
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is preparing a new round of talkks to start in Seattle in Nov 1999. An agenda has yet to be agreed by the 135 WTO members, and there is concern that failure to achieve an agreement could damage free trade. There is opposition from Japan and the European Union (EU) to changes in trade in agricultural products sought by the US, Australia and others, while the EU and US place a stress on labor rights that is opposed by many developing economies.
