The public face of architecture
Article Abstract:
Rory Coonan is head of the Arts Council's Architecture Unit. Coonan is not trained as an architect but has worked for seven years for the Arts Council. His aim is to popularise contemporary architecture and to encourage the government that architecture deserves public funding. He plans three initiatives; a study of public architecture, a conference on the need for architecture centres in Britain and the launch of a grants scheme. Coonan would like the Architecture Unit to look at the links between architecture and the social and behavioural sciences.

Article Abstract:
The Architecture & Design Group (A&DG) is part of the central services of British Rail, and is a remnant of the extremely large British Rail architectural division. It is now 'self-supporting', and must submit tenders for all projects within British Rail's five business sectors. It is involved in around 30% of British Rail work, and has the advantage of being able to deal with emergency and short-deadline projects across the UK. Recently completed railway projects are considered.
