The reckoning
Article Abstract:
Pioneering Taiwan-based computer company Acer aspires to dominate the rapidly changing word of consumer electronics in a risky move with large potential payoffs. The world's fourth-largest maker of personal computers and their parts, Acer has seen profits slip recently due to fierce low-price competition and plummeting prices for memory chips. Founder Stan Shih plans to shift much of the company to making information appliances, starting with a $500 Acer Basic and $199 Acer Kids and Acer Eden computers.

The philosopher-boss: Acer chairman makes hi-tech sound simple
Article Abstract:
Acer chairman Stan Shih unites a fascination with computers and their implications with a down-to-earth style relying on aphorisms and simple analogies. His thoughts obviously range far beyond the bottom line, often taking the form of management theories such as his effort to run his company like a client-server computer network, with autonomous units using central services. Anew product blitz reflects his fears that those who cannot afford a computer will be left behind.

Naming by numbers
Article Abstract:
Electronics manufacturers are launching more and more varieties of stereo and television models, which makes it harder to find names for them. Some companies, such as Matsushita give their products names relating to factory codes, to help stock control. The name of IBM's Aptiva personal computer has no meaning at all, but is easy to pronounce. A product's debut could be delayed if a patent is sought for the name, so it is likely that numbers rather than names will remain.
