The Review contest
Article Abstract:
Fund managers have faced difficult markets in Asia as slower growth has led some markets to go flat and even fall. There was an average rise of 14% for Asian stock markets in 2nd qtr 1997, but this hides major differences. Strong performers include Hong Kong, while Thai stocks have dropped in price. Three fund managers asked for tips have selected three different markets, and they are Hong Kong, Malaysia and Pakistan. Chung Man Wing from HSBC Asset Management performed best in 2nd qtr 1997 when he chose Hong Kong, as he has chosen for 3rd qtr 1997.

Look British, think Chinese: Hongkong Bank stays no. 1
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's top corporate leaders in Far Eastern Economic Review's third annual REVIEW 200 all have strong ties to London but aggressive plans for growth in China. Hongkong Bank repeated in the top overall position and came in first in two categories and second in another. Mass Transit Railway Corp, Swire Pacific, and Cathay Pacific Airways all rose in the standings to the No 2, 3, and 4 slots. All remain cautious regarding China in the short term while seeking a longer-term strategic position, and all are making friends with mainland players.
