The latest tough breeds of timber products
Article Abstract:
Wood is a good construction material, and can be recomposed to create building materials with different properties. Glued-laminated (glulam) timber and components are made from small timber cross-sections bonded with a structural adhesive under pressure. They have greater design stress values than solid timber. Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is a structural composite made from peeled veneers, and has great stiffness and strength in longitudinal directions. Parallel Strand Lumber (PSL) is a structural composite made under pressure and heat. It comes in cross-sections of about 75 x 900 mm and 27 x 200 mm.

European timber standards: Harmonisation of European timber standards is affecting strength grading, structural design service classes, joint design and load testing
Article Abstract:
Timber standards in Britain have recently been changed to harmonise with Europe, incorporating European strength classes, affecting standards for grading and the structural uses of timber. The new standard defines 15 strength classes, and the structural code covers a range of timber, including softwoods, plywood, hardwood, structural chipboard, connectors and hardboard.

Changes to structural timber codes
Article Abstract:
British standards for Visual Stress Grading of Softwood, Structural Timber Grading by Machine and UK Code of Practice, BS 4978, 1996, BS EN 519, 1996 and BS 5268, 1996 respectively, have been modified to blend with European strength classes and nomenclature systems. Service classes one, two and three are used to describe moisture content and climatic conditions.
