US and French troops operating under UN auspices secured the violence-plagued Somalia town of Baidoa in Dec 1992, but the consequences of the military effort remain uncertain. The US troops are set to leave in three months, and famine and anarchy may return.

US troops intervening in Somalia should not find much resistance to their efforts from warring factions. Instead they will be more hampered by a disintegrated society whose economy now solely exists from profiteering off of the relief effort.
