Getting Russia right

The war in Chechnya has forced western nations to rethink their Russian policy and their expectations of Russian cooperation. Pres Yeltsin's commitment to reform, control over the military, and political power are deteriorating, raising many worries about Russian behavior in the future.

Russia looks at the world: westward no?
Article Abstract:
Russia seems determined to blend its identity and future with that of the West, even though much of its territory, culture, ethnicity and history are decidedly Eastern. A anti-Western backlash has risen that still sees to perceive the West in an adversarial way.

Congress has attacked Pres Boris Yeltsin for weak foreign relations policies so Yeltsin appointed Yuri Skokov to head a council which co-ordinates defense and foreign policy. He is drafting tough policies to guide Russia's military.
