The right way for industrial buildings
Article Abstract:
Energy efficiency studies of industrial buildings have resulted in design guidelines outlining the common faults of such buildings and remedies for them. The guidelines apply to warehouses, factories and mixed use buildings and are bsed on cohesive design where fabric, services and activity are considered to be interrelated in their contribution to energy use. Common problems include air leakage, defects in insulation, local overheating in office areas, cold bridging in floor slabs and the effects of rooflights. Good initial design and workmanship solves many of these problems while others can be addressed by adjusting the design and equipment.

Energy efficient buildings
Article Abstract:
Energy efficiency and comfort in buildings is directly influenced by the condition of the envelope. This barrier between the interior and exterior environments should be impervious to air. Faults in the envelope allow air to enter and can cause insulation to have reduced effectiveness and air leakage into the building. The latter cannot be treated and occurs throughout the envelope, not just at doors and windows. It causes discomfort, high heating costs, condensation, rain penetration and poor temperature and humidity control. An air barrier system, combined with controlled ventilation must be used to prevent air leakage.
