Recession receding? industry forecast
Article Abstract:
There are some signs of a small recovery in activity in the construction industry in the United Kingdom. There is a slight increase in building social housing and some work in the private industrial sector. However, commercial buildings and offices are depressed. Office building has contracted 70% since 1989. There is keen competition for work. Construction in London is depressed with an oversupply of offices and very low rentals. There is a possibility of work in expanding public transport. In the South East region, the East Thames corridor offers development potential. East Anglia has been least affected by the recession.

Town design that puts buildings before trafffic
Article Abstract:
The new town, Poundbury, Dorset, England is being designed to keep traffic under control without competely separating it from people. Traffic calming measures will be built into the structure of the town and parking will be treated in ways that will reduce the dominance of parked cars. Measures such as shaped streets, well defined junctions and wide roads are to be used. The plan will succeed if buildings become the centre of attention and are allowed to influence street design.
