The rise and rise of European takeovers
Article Abstract:
The European Commission reveals that the number of mergers involving European Community (EC) businesses increased nearly three-fold between the years 1983 and 1987, and growth in 1988 is expected to be more than 27% by year's end. The mergers and acquisitions (M & A) activity is a result of several elements such as: open borders; the single market in 1992; and financial market deregulation. Experts believe the M & A activity is helping Europe to become unified, but others believe wide-ranging rules between countries makes the activity unclear and unfair. The European Community is working on a directive to give the commission the right to veto large mergers. Businesses support this idea believing it may bring a balance to the merger market.

Time to slaughter the sacred cow
Article Abstract:
The European Community (EC) Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is a drain on the EC treasury; a direct cause of higher consumer prices; and is riddled with fraud, mismanagement and corruption. The CAP, a focus of trade friction between the US and the EC, is a veiled social policy protecting inefficient farmers, and should be dismantled in favor of market forces and a watchdog agricultural policy imposing minimum health standards for food products and workers.
