China has appointed a number of Hong Kong citizens as advisers to the Chinese government on the inner workings of Hong Kong. The advisors are welcomed by the Hong Kong government, but negotiations between China and Britain over government authority in Hong Kong have stalled.

Hong Kong's economic dependence on China is indicated by the trends influencing Hong Kong's declining stockmarket. In autumn of 1992, the Hang Seng index fell 23% as a result of political tension between Hong Kong and China. Other factors are discussed.

Chinese Pres Jiang Zemin attended a rally in Humen which commemorated the beginning of the opium war with the UK in 1839. The issue has resurfaced to remind the Chinese that the UK's possession of Hong Kong was linked to the opium war.
