The shoguns in the shadows
Article Abstract:
The resignation of Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto will probably have a negative impact on the country, as no successor is likely to be able to emulate his achievements, limited as they were. The leading candidate for Hashimoto's job as Liberal Democratic Party Pres is Keizo Obuchi, who is nominal head of the largest faction within the party. He has the backing of the 'Gang of Four,' which has controlled party matters and determined the government's agenda for most of Hashimoto's time in office. Alternative candidates include former chief cabinet secretary Seiroku Kajiyama.

Goodbye, Hashimoto
Article Abstract:
Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto has resigned following his Liberal Democratic Party's poor performance in second-chamber elections. It remains uncertain whether his departure will have a positive impact on Japan's efforts to revive its ailing economy. It is possible that economic reform measures introduced by the new Prime Minister will be less extensive than those that Hashimoto would have introduced if he had been able to remain in power. The results of the second-chamber elections therefore make it less likely that the Japanese economy will undergo rapid recovery.

Leaving it to the old man
Article Abstract:
New Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi is regarded as a safe and rather uninspiring choice. However, his administration will differ significantly from that of his predecessor, Ryutaro Hashimoto. He is clearly influenced by former prime minister Noboru Takeshita, who came into conflict with Hashimoto. Takeshita has obviously played a role in selecting the new leading figures in the Liberal Democratic Party, and has also been influential in the choice of cabinet ministers.
