The third way revealed
Article Abstract:
Anthony Giddens is a sociologist at the London School of Economics who has written about the 'Third Way', an approach to politics which he has interpreted for the United Kingdom. He sets out five dilemmas which include the point that people have become more individualistic, the globalization has affected the sovereignty of nations, and that sometimes government intervention is necessary. His views do not appear startling, and the choice of five dilemmas appears arbitrary. Giddens appears to want more power for the London School of Economics, while the UK prime minister, Tony Blair,is seeking an ideology to cloak his opportunism.

Rules and referendums
Article Abstract:
The chairman of the United Kingdom Committee on Standards in Public Life, Lord Neill, has proposed rules on the way that referendum campaigns are financed. The government will still be able to campaign, if Neill's proposals are adopted, but public funds can be used for both points of view. This is worthwhile even when the opposing view is not popular, since voters should be able to assess both sides of the argument. There are other important issues relating to referendums such as timing and how questions are worded, and an Election Commission should decide on these issues.
