It's a small world after all: Electronic commerce has been hailed as the great leveller, offering small companies the chance to compete with much larger businesses
Article Abstract:
Many believe that electronic commerce puts companies of all sizes on a level playing field. For instance companies can now produce brochures on an Internet site and print them in small customized runs, so that the main advantage of the big company, to be able to spend larger amounts on thousands of brochures, disappears. There are much used technologies such as electronic data interchange, and the slightly less used, such as shared databases, mobile computing and smart cards. Electronic commerce can change the nature of the markets in which companies operate and move the power away from producers towards consumers.

The truth about sharing knowledge
Article Abstract:
Businesses could improve efficiency and productivity if the knowledge of different people was passed to those who needed it most, according to Microsoft president Steve Ballmer. Microsoft has used the concept of knowledge management (KM) to integrate software applications in Microsoft 2000 software package which disperses knowledge throughout a company, thus increasing employee knowledge and efficiency. Developing business communication skills to promote the sharing of knowledge would give firms the competitive edge, rather than the traditional method of hoarding information which may place firms at a disadvantage.

Net music hits a high note
Article Abstract:
New methods of accessing music may have a growing impact on the music market. The major innovation is MP3. MP3 technology allows people to download music from the Internet whilst preserving quality almost equivalent to that obtainable on a compact disc. The music can then be played using the sound card on the computer or on a separately-purchased personal stereo incorporating MP3 technology. RealNetworks is a major player in this revolution with its RealPlayer software, but major record companies and Microsoft Corp. are also developing systems and software.
