Reviving Victorian gems
Article Abstract:
Floor tile maker, H and R Johnson is reviving Victorian encaustic and geometric floor tile designs. Johnson brought the original supplier of such tiles, Minton Hollins in 1968 and revived the old designs in response to the demands of restoration projects. Queen Victoria's patronage of Minton Hollins made its products fashionable throughout the world. Johnson make the tiles by modern methods but are careful in restoration projects to maintain the handmade feel of the originals. There is also an increasing demand from new build projects for encaustic tiles.

Embracing the elements: on the site of a Victorian hotel on a spectacular part of the North Devon coast, Anthony Hudson Architects has created a holiday home with many references but with one focus - the sea
Article Abstract:
A new house was designed by architects Anthony Hudson on the site of a former Victorian hotel on the North Devon coast. The cost of renovation would have been considerably more than the cost of building a new house. The design combines the look of a Devon longhouse with a modern glass building. Internally the living spaces are on the south side with glazed screens framing the views.
