The worm turns
Article Abstract:
A labor union has been set up for the unemployed in Japan, called 'Let's Create Jobs Union for the Unemployed'. This reflects increasing insecurity in the labor market, though job security was previously only enjoyed by a minority working for big companies. Labor unions are weak in Japan compared to western countries, and surplus workers have been moved by paternalistic companies. This is changing as companies restructure, and is linked to a high level of suicide for 1998. Labor union militancy could increase.

Spring inoffensive: Japan
Article Abstract:
Labor unions protesting for more pay failed to stage major strikes that were planned for the spring of 1993. The unions are demanding a 7% increase in basic wages, which has so far been turned down. Some speculate that the recession will end traditional life-long employment.
