Thomson's sale of unit to aid pursuit of Reuters

U.K.-based private equity company Apax Partners Worldwide L.L.P. and Canadian pension firm OMERS Capital Partners Inc. together purchased the Thomson Learning unit from financial news publisher Thomson Corp. for $7.75 bil, enabling Thomson Corp. to pursue the acquisition of Reuters Group PLC. The cash-and-stock Reuters deal is valued at $16.23 bil.

Reed, Thomson benefit from Harcourt purchase

Reed Elsevier PLC's and Thomson Corp.'s acquisition of Harcourt General Corp. will make Reed a major worldwide medical publishing presence.
