New heights for Nepal

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has assumed control of Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport (KTIA) and aims to improve its safety and performance levels. KTIA provides Nepal's primary source of foreign exchange earnings as the gateway to that Asian country. However, major airlines are wary of flying to Kathmandu because of high operational costs relating to the airport's altitude of 1,310m and a runway which extends only 3,280m instead of the typical 4,000m.

Threat to Orly intensifies
Article Abstract:
The viability of Paris' second airport Orly appears to have become more uncertain following the French government's announcement of a proposal to move all flights with a range of more than 5,000 km to Charles de Gaulle. The government said the plan is intended to stem the increasing saturation of Orly's runway system, which has been restricted to 250,000 movements a year since 1994. The proposal, however, will mean the transfer of several airlines such as American Airlines and Royal Nepal Airlines within a year.

Nordic gateway expands
Article Abstract:
The Copenhagen Kastrup airport in Denmark opened a new terminal in Sep 1998. The new Terminal 3 is for the sole use of Scandinavian Airlines System and its partners in the Star Alliance. Designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen architects, the three-level terminal features a rail link designed to take passengers to the Copenhagen city center in 12 minutes. Construction of Terminal 4, meanwhile, is expected to commence in five to six years.
