German chancellor Helmut Kohl absolutely hates the newsweekly Der Spiegel, and thus did not appear at its 50th anniversary celebration. He denounces it as left wing, an orientation due mainly to the fact that the government is dominated by conservatives, who are in better position to be criticized.
